More Mental Load, Good Girl Deprogramming, and becoming Wild & Wiser
Annnnd we’re back! I hope if you had a break over the long weekend/school hols it was a good one and your Inbox was not overflowing (too much to ask?) when you returned.
We did a four-day house swap with a family in Suffolk (our first foray into house swapping using the People Like Us website) which went really well (despite me breaking two of their wineglasses, oops…I did replace them though). This photo really doesn’t do justice to one small corner of the nearby bluebell wood which was the largest I think I have ever seen…
Before we kick off, this is a reminder that this month’s coaching prompt for paid subscribers goes out this Friday and it’s not too late to upgrade to a paid sub for just £40 for the full year or £4 per month. You’ll get a new prompt each month, plus exclusive early bird access to new resources and discount offers.
No new Middling Along episodes since I last wrote to you, but we do have some great ones incoming, and in the meantime I have been starting to add ‘more like this’ links at the bottom of each episode on the website, so if you do find one you enjoy, it’s an easy jump, skip, and hop to binge listen another one (or three)…(and if you do find one that really resonates, please do share it with someone you think might like it too).
But for your listening pleasure I’ve just discovered that sociologist Leah Rupanner - who I mentioned in my newsletter from March the 29th - has a podcast called Miss Perceived.
I’ve just been listening to her episode The Coming Care Crisis: Gray Tsunami, Mental Load, and Why Our Systems Will Break which talks about how the care crisis impacts on people, predominantly women, in terms of relationships, workplaces, and the mental load. It’s a really, really good listen. I highly recommend it. I love her proposal that we should absolutely be putting a value, a monetary value, on care work and making that part of our economies.
Are you a Gatekeeper, Peacemaker, Challenger, Performer, or…?
Future podcast guest Michelle Minnikin is the author of Good Girl Deprogramming, and a few weeks back I took her Good Girl Roles Assessment - which is completely free and gives you free personalised report with your scores across all 16 roles, detailed insights for your highest patterns, and reflection questions to work with. It does sign you up for her mailing list too, for full transparency.
Michelle was kind enough to send me a copy of the Teen Edition of her book which is now out - which reminds me I need to bribe the 12 year old to read it and write a review before I interview Michelle… I road tested it first of course, and can recommend it if you have a smart, sensitive, caring young woman in your life aged 12-14 (I think older teens might feel it’s too young for them).
Wild & Wiser
Michelle is just one of the brilliant women speaking at the new kid on the block Wild & Wiser festival in Dorset this September. Other speakers include past podcast guest Lauren Currie, Sharon Von Simson (who has the BEST portfolio career ever, combining coaching with being a stand up comedian, and was on my coaching course so I can 100% vouch for her awesomeness), oh, and cough yours truly will be waxing lyrical about the ‘Menopocalypse.’
You should totally come and hang out, it’s going to be ACE.
Use my discount code WW_EMMAT10 to get 10% off weekend tickets.

And if you can’t make it, please keep your fingers and toes crossed for sunshine for us because I’ll be sleeping in our teepee style tent which is a nightmare when it gets wet…!
[By the way, I’m still testing out Wispr Flow to dictate parts of these newsletters. My two-week free trial did run out, but I have discovered that you can continue using it for free on desktop. If you want to be able to use it on your phone and across various phone apps, then you do need a paid subscription. #notanadjustafan]
Here’s the bit where I remind folks that you can find out more about various ways to work with me here: https://www.thetripleshift.org/starthere and you can book a free chat with me here: https://tidycal.com/emmathomas if you are curious about coaching…please do also share my details with your HR team at work or if you have a women’s network that organises external speakers and workshops - thank you!
See you next time, and paid Substackers, you’ll be hearing from me on Friday!

Thank you Emma ❤️! Love those bluebells! 😍
I tried to take a bluebell picture last weekend too and also commented that it didn’t do it justice. They were so stunning in person!
