Strength (again!), menopause research and an Oestrogel tip...
Working out how to work out…
There’s an awful lot of ‘noise’ (and nonsense) out there on social media about midlife and exercise ‘shoulds’ and ‘shouldn’ts’…
Alyssa Olenick is one voice I absolutely trust and often posts on peri/menopause - for example:
This account from Prof Stu Phillips is another solid, based on evidence, account:
And this recent study comparing heavy vs moderate strength training is reassuring if you are looking for brain health benefits (like me!) - thebraindocs is another great account to follow:
If you’re new to me/the podcast, here are some great episodes from the archives to check out on exercise and midlife/menopause:

Menopause is a multi-billion pound market - but what works?
Research from the University of Oxford is looking into the products we buy to manage peri/menopause symptoms - I’ve just filled in the questionnaire, and if you’d like to help inform research in this important area the link is:

Every day’s a school day…
A few weeks back I had my HRT review over the phone with my lovely GP…and was shocked when she told me that technically, you’re not supposed to use the first few, or last few pumps of Oestrogel from the pump dispenser…
Mic drop…how have I only just learned this? Apparently you should discard the first few pumps, and stop using the pump dispenser once the pump no longer ‘springs back up’ after you have pushed it down, as you get to the end of the contents…and there’s me dutifully using up every last drop!
I’ve also increased my dose again to 3 pumps…my joints had started to ache again so GP suggested upping the dose and joint pain has gone again!
Your GP will likely not automatically call you in for an HRT review, but you should book one at least once a year, and don’t hestiate to do it more often if you need to.
(I know not everyone can, or wants to, take HRT, but I figure sharing my own journey might be helpful to at least one other person.)
That’s all from me for now,
Emma
